Embracing the Montessori Philosophy

The Montessori curriculum is rooted in the belief that children learn best through active exploration and discovery. It emphasizes independence, respect for a child’s natural psychological development, and the importance of a prepared environment. At The Rockridge Montessori School, we foster a love for learning by allowing children to progress at their own pace, encouraging curiosity, and developing critical thinking skills. Our approach nurtures the whole child, balancing academic, social, and emotional growth, and prepares them for lifelong success.

Key Features of Our Montessori Curriculum

Child-Centered Learning

Our curriculum is tailored to each child’s individual needs, promoting self-paced and self-directed learning.

Hands-On Exploration

Children engage with tactile materials that encourage exploration and discovery, fostering a deeper understanding of concepts.

Mixed-Age Classrooms

Students learn collaboratively in a diverse environment, benefiting from peer learning and mentorship opportunities.

Montessori Curriculum

Our curriculum is based on integrated studies, rather than a traditional model broken up into separate subjects, in which topics are considered only at specific grade levels.

Sensorial Education

These are exercises in perception, observation, fine discrimination, and classification that play a major role in helping our children to develop their sense of logic and concentration.

Practical Life Skills

One of our first goals is to develop in the very young child a strong and realistic sense of independence and self-reliance. Along with love and a stable environment, this is the child’s greatest need.

Language Arts

The process of learning to read and write almost always comes naturally and begins with a child’s first interest. We begin by placing our youngest students in classes in which the older students are already beginning to read.

Mathematics & Geometry

Montessori’s famous hands-on learning math materials make abstract concepts clear and concrete. Students can literally see and explore what is going on in their math studies.

Geography

We are all members of the human family. Our goal is to develop a global perspective. An introduction to world cultures forms a cornerstone of our curriculum.

Science

Dr. Montessori passed a deep love for the world of nature on to thousands of students through a program of outdoor education and gardening. We see this as the foundation of a lifelong interest in the sciences.

History

We are all members of the human family. Our roots lie in the distant past and history is the story of our common heritage. Without a strong sense of history, we cannot begin to know who we are as individuals today.
